Medical Facilities
Local drugstores and hospital pharmacies are the sources of medications in Belize. Most pharmaceuticals are imported from North America or Europe and therefore it is easy to find familiar brands such as Tylenol, Zyrtec, Advil, Zythromax, Nexium, and Flixonase. The majority of residents utilize Government Hospitals such as the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, San Ignacio Hospital, Orange Walk Hospital, Corozal Hospital, Dangriga Hospital, and Punta Gorda Hospital. Delivery of the Government Health plan is aided by several health posts located in remote villages.
In the towns, numerous General Practitioners manage their own clinics and have the ability to diagnose and administer prescriptions; normally, they charge around USD$10 to USD$15 per appointment.
Private hospitals include Belize Medical Associates, Universal Health Services, and the Loma Luz Clinic. These hospitals charge a higher price (USD$25) than do the General Practitioners, as their services tend to be more specialized. Private hospitals tend to have better stocked pharmacies, more modern and highly specialized equipment, and better security. These hospitals are equipped with machines such as X-Rays, Mammograms, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (M.R.I.), Ultra Sound, and Electro Kardio Gram (EKG) Machines.
In order to accommodate the high volumes of cruise passengers, Pharmacy Express was established beside the Tourist Village in Belize City. The Belize National Healthcare Plan is managed by the Ministry of Health, which is headquartered in Belmopan City.
