The Legal system practiced in Belize is based the British system. The law is made up of statutes and interpretations which govern civil, commercial and criminal law. Company law allows locals and foreigners the framework to form, operate, and dissolve businesses. The legal framework also allows for contracting, dispute resolution, and the financing of firms. The Belize Companies Act – CH. 250 is the main source of company law in Belize.

Under Belizean law, the following forms of ownership are recognized:

  • Private company,
  • Limited liability partnership
  • Limited life company
  • Joint venture or cooperative
  • Partnership
  • Sole proprietor
  • Public investment company
  • Trust fund
  • International business company (IBC).

Registering a business and carrying out related steps to start a business requires nine main procedures:

  1. Conduct a name search at the Companies’ Registry
  2. Register company statutes and memorandum and articles of association at the Company’s Registry
  3. Submit application to the local council for a trade license
  4. Receive inspection from the local council inspector
  5. Pay for the trade license at the local council
  6. Make a company seal
  7. Register the company for business tax at the income tax department
  8. Register the company for general sales tax (GST) at the GST office
  9. Register the employees with the Social Security Board
